Livni heads to China in drive against Iran nuclear program
By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent, DPA and Haaretz Staff

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni set out for China on Saturday night for a visit that is part of a broader Israeli effort to press world leaders on Iran's nuclear program.

Livni is expected to tell Chinese officials that if the international community turns a blind eye to Iran's nuclear designs, there will be dire consequences for the struggle between the extremists and the moderates in the Middle East and, as a result, for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, is staunchly opposed to stepping up the sanctions against Iran, an important trading partner.

Livni will meet with China's prime minister and foreign minister as well as other government and Communist Party officials, academics and media personalities close to the regime. Livni's message will be that sanctions on Iran, "the neighborhood bully," are necessary to avoid a domino effect in the Middle East.

The foreign minister will stress that time is running out, and that only economic pressure, sanctions and other steps set by the Security Council can solve the Iranian nuclear problem peacefully.

Livni's visit picks up where Prime Minister Ehud Olmert left off with his recent visits to Moscow, Paris and London, and is part of a comprehensive Israeli diplomatic effort against Iran's nuclearization.

German FM: Nuclear arms must not reach Holocaust deniers
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Saturday that nuclear weapons must not land "in the hands of people who deny the Holocaust," in a reference to remarks by Ahmadinejad and to his country's nuclear program.

Steinmeier, however, also strongly warned against any "military adventures" against Iran in the conflict over its nuclear activities. He made the remarks in a speech at the national congress of his Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Hamburg.

The foreign minister's remarks came after the United States announced Thursday sweeping new sanctions against Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran's defense ministry and a number of banks.

Ahmadinejad has described the Holocaust as a myth and has called for Israel to be wiped off the map. In addition to this, Iran this year hosted an international conference questioning whether the Nazis used gas chambers to kill Jews during the Holocaust.

Steinmeier declared: "We must prevent nuclear weapons in the Middle East. But military adventures are no contribution to a solution."

"On the contrary, the daily ranting about it only makes a solution more difficult," Steinmeier said.

The foreign minister added that Iranian possession of nuclear weapons "would destabilise the entire Middle East," while stressing that Germany continue to work towards a diplomatic solution along with the United States, Russia and China.
