IDF soldier hurt in drive-by shooting in West Bank

An Israel Defense Forces soldier was seriously wounded on Wednesday when he was shot in his pelvis and limbs in a drive-by shooting near the Ariel Junction in the West Bank.

The 20-year-old soldier was taken to the Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva for treatment after suffering three bullet wounds. A civilian was also lightly wounded from shrapnel and taken to hospital for examination.

Police said the assailants fired from a vehicle with Palestinian license plates and sped away after the shooting. The attack occurred at a crowded hitchhiking post at the entrance to Ariel, a major West Bank settlement near the Palestinian city of Nablus.

The driver of the car was suspected to have headed in the direction of the Tapuah Junction. The Israel Defense Forces have set up multiple road blocks in the area and have deployed troops to search the locale.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said authorities were investigating the
incident. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the northern West Bank is known as a stronghold of Palestinian militants.

Meanwhile, senior defense officials decided in an urgent meeting Tuesday to recommend to Defense Minister Ehud Barak and the cabinet the imposition of further sanctions on the Gaza Strip after more than 10 rockets were fired at Israel over the last few days.

Two rockets fired early Tuesday struck near open areas adjacent to western Negev kibbutzim, causing no damage or injuries.

Eight mortars were also fired from inside Gaza, and struck near the Israel-Gaza border fence. The IDF said Tuesday morning that 15 Qassam rockets had been fired at Israel over the preceding 24 hours.
