IDF kills 2 Hamas men, Islamic Jihad militant in Gaza clashes

An Islamic Jihad militant was killed Thursday afternoon in clashes with the Israel Defense Forces in northern Gaza, hours after IDF troops killed two members of Hamas' military wing in the southern part of the Strip.

Islamic Jihad reported that the IDF had killed two of its members during the north Gaza clash, but the IDF spokesman's office issued a statement saying one militant had been killed and another was detained for questioning.

The incident on Thursday afternoon began when an IDF lookout spotted two Palestinians approaching the fence on Gaza's northern border carrying two explosive devices. An elite infantry unit attacked the militants killing one of them. The other was detained.

Early Thursday morning, Palestinian militants fired two Qassam rockets toward the western Negev. Both rockets struck open fields in the southern town of Sderot, causing to injuries or damage.

Thursday afternoon, four mortar shells struck near the Sufa checkpoint on southern Gaza's border with Israel. There were no injuries.

Israel will in the coming days begin cutting electricity to the Gaza Strip as a response to Qassam rocket fire, after Defense Minister Ehud Barak gave final approval to the defense establishment plan on Thursday.

Two militants belonging to Hamas' armed wing were killed before dawn Thursday east of the southern Gaza town of Khan Yunis, Hamas officials said.

Palestinian paramedics said residents in the village of Abbassan called an ambulance to pick up the bodies of two members of the al-Qassam Brigades.

The group said in a leaflet sent to reporters that an IDF elite unit penetrated an area east of the village and shot dead two stationed Hamas militants near the borders with Israel.

The IDF said it had fired on militants close to the Gaza security fence.

On Wednesday two Palestinians were killed during an IDF strike in northern Gaza, Palestinian officials said.

The IDF said ground forces hit militants who had launched three rockets from the Gaza town of Beit Hanun. Security officials from Hamas confirmed the target was a militant rocket squad.

The militants killed in the strike were 14-year-old Mohammed Kalub and 15-year-old Abda Abu Ascar, both members of the militant group Islamic Jihad.

The IDF strike comes one day after a senior Hamas government official and deputy commander of the Popular Resistance Committees was killed as the Israel Air Force targeted a car carrying a rocket launching crew in the Gaza Strip.

The IDF often targets Palestinians trying to fire rockets from northern Gaza or planting explosives along the Gaza-Israel border.

Meanwhile, Palestinian militants in the northern Gaza Strip fired 6 Qassam rockets toward the western Negev shortly before the IDF strike. Three rockets struck the town of Sderot, and two people were consequently treated for shock. No damage was reported.
