Three Palestinian militants killed in IDF operations

Three Palestinian militants wanted by the Israel Defense Forces were killed in two separate incidents yesterday in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

In Jenin yesterday morning, two Islamic Jihad militants wanted by the authorities were killed in a shootout with undercover IDF commandos. An IDF officer suffered minor injuries to his face during the operation and was evacuated to Haemek hospital in Afula for treatment.

Khaled Reik, 43, a resident of Tul Karm, and his aide, Mohammed Jawabara, from the village of Ra'i in the northern West Bank, were killed when their hideout was besieged by IDF soldiers. The two were armed with automatic weapons when they were killed, and they tried to escape during the gun battle.

IDF sources said Reik is considered an Islamic Jihad leader in the northern West Bank and is suspected of planning suicide bombings and shooting attacks. Reik is also believed to be behind the shooting attack against an IDF position near Tul Karm, on July 12, in which the gunman was killed.

In response to the killings of the two Islamic Jihad militants, the groups fired Qassam rockets from the Gaza Strip against Israel. At least nine rockets were fired, four landing harmlessly in fields. One rocket hit a building in Sderot, causing damage but no injuries.

The militants also fired mortars against IDF forces operating inside the Gaza Strip, close to the border fence.

In the afternoon, the air force targetted a vehicle in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip. One person was killed.

The IDF said missiles were fired against the vehicle of a person involved in terrorism who is part of the Popular Resistance Committees.
