del.icio.us Digg It!  new Last update - 16:37 22/10/2007 Petah Tikva man suspected of beating wife, trying to set her on fire By Roni Singer-Heruti, Haaretz Correspondent A Petah Tikva man was arrested on Monday on suspicion that he beat and stabbed his wife, and then attempted to set her on fire. Late Sunday night, a neighbor of the couple called police complaining that her neighbor was drunk and banging loudly on her door. Police who arrived at the scene determined that the man was drunk, but left shortly afterwards without following routine procedures for such a case. The man's wife was found by the same neighbor the next morning, in critical condition with bruises and stab wounds all over her body. Police believe that shortly after the officers left hours before, the man brutally beat and stabbed his wife before attempting to light her on fire. Advertisement The husband was arrested shortly thereafter and is currently under investigation. Police believe that the failure of the officers to prevent the assault on the victim represents a serious dereliction of duty and have opened an investigation. The neighbor's daughter told Haaretz Monday that her mother called her and told her that the husband was drunk and going wild in the stairwell, and that she feared for her life. The daughter stated that she heard her mother ask the Police to check on the wife because she had heard her screaming and then suddenly stop, and hadn't heard from her in a long while. She added her mother asked Police to kick down the door, but they refused, deciding instead to leave after they knocked on the door and received no answer. The daughter said that she spoke to the severely injured woman who told her that she heard Police outside her door but was not able to scream.
