Jordan's king voices support for upcoming regional peace meet
By The Associated Press

Jordan's King Abdullah II voiced support for a U.S.-sponsored international peace conference following talks in Britain Thursday with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, a royal palace statement said.

Abdullah expressed Jordan's strong support for the planned international meeting on the Middle East, the statement said. But it did not refer to Arab suggestions to postpone the meeting to complete preparations between the Israelis and Palestinians.

The statement quoted the king as telling Rice during a closed-door meeting in the British capital, where Abdullah is on an official visit, that he was encouraged to hear the progress achieved during Secretary Rice's talks in the Middle East.

It said the Jordanian monarch expressed hope that the meeting - which is tentatively planned to be held in Annapolis, Maryland, in late November - would mark a major milestone towards the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in the near future.

"He stressed that the conference must achieve a positive outcome, which would help the Palestinians and Israelis reach agreement on all related final status issues, including the issues of Jerusalem and refugees," the statement said.

He also said the opportunity to achieve peace and enhance security and stability in the Middle East should not be missed.

Addressing Israel, the king said his peace partner - with whom Jordan signed a peace treaty in 1994 - must show more political flexibility and to cease any activity that could raise tensions.

Abdullah praised Rice, saying her Mideast shuttle diplomacy reflected the U.S. administration's commitment to achieve a peace settlement that would meet the aspirations of the Palestinian people to establish their own independent state.

The U.S. has not set a date yet or issued invitations for the Annapolis meeting, but hopes key Arab states - including Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia - will attend. Arab leaders have said that before accepting an invitation, they want to be sure the conference deals with substance.
