Visiting U.S. mayors look to partner with Israeli biotech firms
By Haaretz Service and The Associated Press

Visiting mayors from the United States said Thursday they were interested in joint projects with Israeli concerns, following a tour of the country's leading biotechnology companies.

At a lunch on the final day of the 25th annual Jerusalem mayors conference, the mayors said they were impressed with Israeli high-tech industry and would encourage some companies back home to set up partnerships with them.

"I did not understand coming in the extent of the biotech industries in this part of the world, and we also have an economy increasingly based on biotech and high-tech industries," said David Cieslewicz, mayor of Madison, Wisconsin. "It's a relationship we can really build on.

The conference, which was sponsored by the American Jewish Congress - Council for World Jewry, brought 40 mayors from 30 countries to Israel for four days. One of its purposes is to promote such joint ventures.

During the week the mayors toured Jerusalem, attended forums discussing the business of how to run a city and met with several leaders, including Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, President Shimon Peres, former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni.

They also toured Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital, where many said they were impressed with Israeli scientific achievements.

For most of the mayors, Peres, 84, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was the highlight of their political meetings.

"Meeting Shimon Peres, and listening to him speak, was extraordinary," said David N. Cicilline, mayor of Providence, Rhode Island. "Hearing him talk about our responsibility as mayors ... was really powerful."

The mayors also said the trip was an eye-opening and a powerful lesson in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"When you are a young person seeing and hearing about a lot things that have gone on in this region - in the news - you have one perspective," said Mark Mallory, mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio. "But when you come here and you visit and you talk to the people and you see the areas, you have another.
