Second Al-Aqsa militant killed by IDF in as many days
By Avi Issacharoff and Amos Harel

One Palestinian was killed yesterday and at least four others were injured during separate incidents in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

A member of Fatah's militant wing, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, was killed during an incident involving a patrol of undercover Border Police in Jenin yesterday. The dead man is Mohammed Abu Sarur, 20.

The incident occurred when the undercover unit traveled in two unmarked vehicles in the eastern neighborhoods of Jenin, and stopped the car in which Abu Sarur and another militant, Hilal Sa'adi, were traveling. Security sources said that Abu Sarur, who was driving, drew a pistol and was shot dead. The other man was arrested and taken for questioning. There were no injuries to the Border Police patrol.

This is the second time in as many days that an Al-Aqsa Martyrs militant was shot and killed during an encounter with Israeli undercover security forces in the West Bank. In the Gaza Strip, infantry from the Golani Brigade, backed by armor and combat engineers, carried out a number of operations, about two kilometers west of the Kissufim crossing point.

In two cases, the force exchanged gunfire with armed Palestinians, hitting four. Palestinian sources confirmed that four Palestinians were hit but did not offer details.

In another operation, IDF troops found seven Qassam rocket launchers in the outskirts of Beit Hanun, in the northern Gaza Strip. During yesterday's ground operations, a dozen Palestinians were arrested for questioning.

At dawn yesterday, IDF attack helicopters identified militants who had just launched a Qassam rocket against the western Negev. Even though the Palestinians reported that some Islamic Jihad militants were injured, details have not been available. The rocket fired against Israel hit open fields causing no injuries or damage.

Meanwhile, tensions between Hamas and Fatah in the Gaza Strip continue, as mass prayers are expected to be held outdoors on the first day of Id al-Fitr, which closes the month of Ramadan. As in the past, Hamas has sought to stop the prayers because they have turned into political rallies by Fatah supporters, resulting in clashes with Hamas-controlled security forces in the Strip. Hamas has already announced that any prayers that are political in nature are forbidden.

For its part, Fatah was keen yesterday to emphasize that claims by Hamas deposed prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh, that there has been serious progress in the dialogue between the two groups, are false. In a statement yesterday, Fatah said that it rejects any such negotiations. Fatah announced that it does not back any internal Palestinian negotiations so long as Hamas does not relinquish control over the Gaza Strip, but a source says that there is a chance the two sides will meet in Cairo for talks in the near future.
