Palestinians: Border Police troops kill Fatah militant near Jenin

Border Police troops killed a militant from the armed wing of Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement in the West Bank on Thursday, Palestinian security and hospital officials said.

Palestinian security officials said the man was killed by undercover forces operating near the West Bank city of Jenin. They said he was shot while driving a wanted Islamic Jihad militant.

Also Thursday, Israel Defense Forces tanks and infantry units were operating in the central Gaza Strip.

The IDF said four Palestinian militants were hurt in the fighting, while Palestinian sources reported five wounded.

The officials identified dead Fatah man as Mohammed Abu Tsror, 21, and said the Islamic Jihad activist with him in the car escaped unharmed from the pursuit by undercover soldiers dressed in civilian clothes.

The official said Abu Tsror had been a member of the Palestinian national security force, but recently joined the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades and was wanted by Israel.

An IDF spokeswoman said a special police force operating near Jenin shot a militant who attempted to fire at them.

Security forces frequently operate in West Bank towns in search of militants suspected of involvement in attacks against Israelis. On Wednesday, IDF troops operating undercover in Nablus killed a wanted Fatah militant who had broken an amnesty deal signed with Israel.

Also Thursday, Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip fired a rocket at the western Negev, Israel Radio reported.

According to the radio, the Israel Air Force targeted the rocket launchers, and Palestinian sources said one militant was wounded in the strike.
