Jewish cemetery in Siberian city vandalized a third time in decade
By The Associated Press
Vandals desecrated a Jewish cemetery in Siberia, overturning or breaking 64 grave markers, a leading Russian Jewish community organization said Monday.

The vandalism came amid concerns about persistent racism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism in Russia.

The attack occurred late Sunday or early Monday at the Jewish cemetery in the city of Krasnoyarsk, about 3,400 kilometers east of Moscow, the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia said.

It said that the cemetery had been seriously vandalized twice before in the past decade, and that anti-Semitic slogans had been scrawled several times on the walls of the city's synagogue, but nobody had been prosecuted over the incidents.

The insufficient reaction of Russian society to such incidents hinders the mobilization of the necessary resources for fighting xenophobia and extremism, the organization said in a statement.

Russia and the Soviet Union have a long history of state-sponsored anti-Semitism. The state no longer actively fosters anti-Semitism, following the Soviet collapse, but many Jews and rights advocates have accused Russian authorities of being silent in the face anti-Semitism and other expressions of xenophobia.

In recent years, Russia has experienced a marked rise in attacks targeting nonwhite or dark-skinned residents, foreigners and Jews.
