MI: Syria likely to respond to IAF strike using ally like Hezbollah

Damascus is liable to respond to Israel's September 6 air strike on an alleged Syrian nuclear facility, but probably not via direct military action, Military Intelligence chief Amos Yadlin told the cabinet on Sunday. An operation by an ally such as Hezbollah in Lebanon was more likely.

"In our view, Syria does not want to escalate the situation and embark on a conflict with Israel right now," he said. "However, we believe that it could work against Israel indirectly."

Syria was also on the agenda in Israeli officials' talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan on Sunday. Babacan, who will be here for two days, was in Damascus earlier in the day.

Babacan first met with President Shimon Peres, to whom he submitted an official invitation to visit Ankara next month from Turkish President Abdullah Gul. He also updated Peres on his talks in Syria, which he described as positive.

Babacan said he had encouraged Syria to take part in next month's planned international peace conference, and that Syrian officials had told him they were interested in seeing the Israeli-Syrian track on the conference's agenda as well.

Peres responded that Israel would be willing to make peace if Syrian President Bashar Assad were serious, but currently Assad is playing a double game: talking about peace while supporting international terror, including against Israel, and trying to topple the Lebanese government.

Babacan also discussed Syria with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, though only in general terms, and will do so again when he meets Prime Minister Ehud Olmert today.

Turkey is still awaiting an Israeli explanation of the fuel tanks found in Turkish territory following Israel's air strike on Syria last month. The tanks were apparently dropped by Israeli planes as they left Syria.
