del.icio.us Digg It!  new Last update - 08:19 05/10/2007 New Zealand official: Israeli ambassador's request for Maori aide illegal By DPA Israel's new ambassador to Australia and New Zealand, Yuval Rotem, said he wants to hire a Maori personal assistant to work at the embassy in Canberra, a newspaper reported Friday. However New Zealand's Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres told the newspaper that it was unlawful in New Zealand to hire somebody on the basis of ethnicity, and Australian law was probably the same. Rotem, who is accredited to New Zealand from Canberra, told Wellington's Dominion Post that he wants to hire "an indigenous New Zealander ... a non-Jewish Maori ... to remind me on a daily basis New Zealand is also on my agenda," he said. Rotem said that hiring someone who understood New Zealand culture and philosophy would help him do his job better.
