Yom Kippur road crash that killed girl to be probed as a murder

The Northern District Attorney's Office instructed the police on Sunday to investigate as a murder case the death of nine-year-old Tal Zino, who was run over in Kfar Tavor over Yom Kippur.

The prosecution has said that it could not reveal any details about the case as the incident was still under investigation.

Assad Shibli, 20, crashed an all-terrain vehicle into nine-year-old Tal Zino near a synagogue on Yom Kippur. He was immediately arrested, and his remand was extended by six days on Saturday.

The suspect was driving the vehicle despite the fact that his license had been recently revoked, due to a traffic violation. Moreover, the owner of the ATV maintained that the suspect had stolen the vehicle from him.

The native of the village of Shibli, which is situated near Kfar Tavor, was taken to hospital after he suffered minor injuries when the ATV overturned as a result of the accident.

Shibli continually maintained that he had entered Kfar Tavor in order to draw money from a cash machine at the bank and was then frightened by some local residents and began to drive fast, consequently losing control of the vehicle.

Investigators were reluctant to accept his version of events, since the ATM is situated at the entrance to Kfar Tavor while the synagogue is in the middle of the village.

Another suspect who was involved in the crash, also a Shibli resident, turned himself in to the authorities on Friday after the police had searched for him for nearly a week.
