IEC to hire 150 non-Jews to avoid violating Shabbat laws

The IEC will hire 150 non-Jewish workers to prevent Sabbath violation at its facilities, according to a decision last week by National Infrastructures Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer.

The step is part of the process to advance a new law regulating electricity production on the Jewish Sabbath. Electricity can either be automatically generated or produced by non-Jewish workers on Saturdays.

The cost of implementing the changes is estimated at NIS 200 million, and electricity rates will rise to reflect the costs.

Certain groups in the ultra-Orthodox sector refuse to use electricity from the IEC on Shabbat since they fear Jews violated religious law to produce it on the Sabbath. These communities are mostly found in Jerusalem, Beni Brak, Beit Shemesh, Elad and Rekhasim; and they instead use small generators spread around their communities for electricity on Saturday. These connections are usually illegal, and often unsafe.

A number of rabbis recently issued a ruling allowing the use of such electricity produced by non-Jews.
