Gov't bans Hebron settlers from winterizing controversial house
By Nadav Shargai, Haaretz Correspondent

The Defense Ministry is prohibiting settler families in Hebron's controversial "peace house" from preparing their homes for winter, explaining that any change in the status quo would be a violation of a court order.

The fate of the "peace house," where 25 Jewish families reside, has yet to be decided. The settlers entered the building between Hebron and Kiryat Arba a few months ago after claiming that they rightfully purchased it.

In the building, where Torah lessons are also given, there are no windows - only gaps where windows were intended to be installed and the roof has not been insulated.

An urgent appeal to the Defense Ministry's decision was submitted to the Civil Administration appeals committee, stating that the field officials are not against installing windows, insulating the roof and hooking the building up to electricity.

Orin Struk, a senior member of the committee of Hebron Jews, said that the requests are not intended to influence the question of ownership on the building but are rather for humanitarian reasons only.

According to Struk, the building is inhabited by several children whose health must be looked after, and it must be fixed in order to avoid floods and disease.

Struk said that if the army had denied the Palestinians from preparing the building for winter, then "the whole country would be in a fit."

She added that the Defense Ministry's decision was based on foreign and illegitimate political motives since they are against the Jews residing in the location.
