University heads, faculty threaten strike over funds dispute
By Tamara Traubmann, Haaretz Correspondent

Senior university faculty members and university heads said Monday that the semester slated to start in October will be put on hold due to standing disputes with the Finance Ministry.

Senior faculty members announced that they would go on strike at the start of the semester to protest stalled negotiations over a new collective work contract.

Earlier Monday, a meeting between academics and treasury officials ended without reaching an agreement and an announcement of their decision to strike was sent to the university heads.

Finance Ministry officials said academics demand to receive a pay rise of over 5 percent was "unrealistic."

University heads, in turn, warned that they too would go on strike unless the government added at least NIS 300 million to their budgets.

Bar Ilan University President Moshe Kaveh sent a letter to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Finance Minister Roni Bar-On and Education Minister Yuli Tamir asking them to find an "immediate solution" to their demand to increase their budget.
