AG decides to indict ex-finance min. Hirchson for fraud, theft

Attorney General Menachem Mazuz on Monday announced his intention to try Abraham Hirchson over charges of fraud and theft, but said he would grant the former finance minister a hearing to dissuade him from his decision before charges are pressed.

Should Hirchson's defense team fail to convince the attorney general not to indict the Kadima politician, the indictment will proceed as planned, Mazuz said.

Earlier this month, the Israel Police recommended indicting Hirchson after an investigation revealed evidence suggesting the former minister had embezzled millions of shekels from the National Workers' Organization, a workers' union he headed between 1998 - 2005, and from Nili, a non-profit organization associated with the Histadrut national labor federation.

Hirchson will face charges over crimes allegedly committed while he served as the chairman of the organization as well as after the end of his term.

The police investigators said in a statement earlier this year that they had uncovered sufficient evidence to indict the Kadima member for breach of trust, aggravated fraud, theft and money laundering.

The police questioned Hirchson five times during the investigation. The police concluded its investigation of the affair earlier this month.

Police suspect that Hirchson used some of the NIS 5.65 million allegedly embezzled from Nili to finance political activity in the Likud party, of which Hirchson was a member before joining Kadima.

Hirchson resigned from the Finance Ministry in July because of the investigation against him.
