Sela puts Israel in finals with upset over Top 10 Chilean
By Nir Wolf and Rami Hipsh

Dudi Sela pulled off one of the most fantastic sports moments in Israel's history yesterday by outlasting Chile's Fernando Gonzalez 4-6, 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (7), 6-3 to clinch Israel's spot in the next stage of the Davis Cup tournament.

After four sets and over four hours of play, the 5,000 specatators in the Ramat Hasharon tennis stadium sensed something special in the air. At that moment Sela entered his zone. "Something changed in me at the end of the fourth set," the country's number-one tennis player tried to explain.

"Suddenly, I felt I was entering the zone. I was in a world of my own, and I simply didn't pay any attention to what was happening around me. I was just concentrated on my game. I felt so good that I was afraid it would end." He continued, "Because I wanted to stay in the zone at any price I started to play real fast. I didn't wait in between points, which is usually not a good move, but at that stage the only thing on my mind was how to keep my zone, and that was it."

And he kept it, even though in the second game of the decisive set the head judge overruled an "out" call by one of the line judges, allowing Gonzalez to avoid being broken by Sela. Still, the No.-105 player in the world got over it; in his zone, it didn't matter that his opponent was ranked sixth.

"In the fifth set I raised my game and played better," Sela observed. "We were both tired, but I managed to get past that. It's the greatest victory in my career even though I know I can play even better."

The stadium practically exploded when Sela broke Gonzalez in the fourth game of the final set to take a 3-1 lead. He demonstrated wisdom and used his talent and tactics to make the decisive points. "My serve didn't work today, but luckily I understood that from the onset," Sela said. "It worked out well because otherwise I would have built too much on the serve and neglected tactics."

With the victory, Sela took Israel's Davis team to the Davis Cup Final for the first time since 1994. Defying all logic, the Israelis notched up an impressive victory for the books. They sent home stars like Olympic medalists Gonzales and Nicolas Massu.
