Haifa teen dies after inhaling butane at school with friends

A 14-year-old boy died Tuesday after inhaling butane gas on the grounds of a school in the Haifa suburb of Kiryat Bialik.

The teen's body was taken to a morgue for an autopsy in order to determine the cause of death. The police launched an investigation into the incident.

The youth and three of his friends had evidently come to the school yard Tuesday afternoon and began "huffing" the gas. The initial police investigation revealed that the group had purchased a canister of the gas from one of the mini-markets in the area.

The teen, a Haifa resident who was in Kiryat Bialik visiting family, lost his consciousness after inhaling the gas and collapsed. According to Magen David Adom paramedic Gil Latman, the friends panicked and fled the scene.

"A passerby called us and informed us of the situation. Later, the friends came back. When we arrived, the teen was already dead and it appeared that he had been lying there for some time," Latman said.

The commander of the Zevulun police precinct said that "gas huffing" is a new phenomenon among teens. "We will investigate the event and the phenomenon. From a legal standpoint, there is no prohibition against selling these canisters," he said.
