Study: 60% of immigrant youths don't identify themselves as Israeli

Only a third of Israeli youths born in the Commenwealth of Independent States (CIS) comprised of the former Soviet Union republics or whose families immigrated from there to Israel identify themselves as Israeli, according to a report published Tuesday.

In addition, almost 90 of the teenaged respondents said they drank alcohol in the past year, a third claimed they had used drugs and 10 percent said they committed violent acts while being intoxicated by illegal substances.

In a press conference revealing the study's findings, Managing Director of the Israel Anti Drug Abuse Foundation (IADAF, Haim Messing, said the figures point at a feeling of alienation among recent immigrants.

"Most youths of families who arrived from the former CIS don't see themselves as Israelis," Messing said. "They feel rejected by Israeli-born youths and want to associate only with youth from the former CIS."

Some 750 youths between the ages 12 and 18 born in the former CIS or whose parents had immigrated from there to Israel participated in the study conducted by Dr. Arnon Edelstein of the Hebrew University's criminology department, and Dr. Rachel Hamburger, the authority's chief scientist.

Youths consuming psychoactive substances were prone to dropping out of school, and were more often from single parent homes; families not recognized as Jewish according to the halakah or whose sources of income were low, researchers said.
