Sderot residents petition court, demand state safeguard homes
By Mijal Grinberg, Haaretz Correspondent

Some 30 Sderot residents petitioned the High Court of Justice on Monday demanding that their homes be safeguarded from Qassam rockets.

The petition maintains that the state has failed to meet its promise to protect the residents of the western Negev town from the near-daily threat of rockets fired into the area from Gaza by Palestinian militants.

The homes addressed in the petition are cottages with tile roofs that are easily penetrable.

Some of the petitioners pooled their personal funds and built a "security room" ? and are now asking to court to instruct the state to reimburse them.

Previous petitions filed by Sderot residents demanded that the state reinforce schools in the city, not homes. At the beginning of the school year earlier this month the Sderot parents' association petitioned the High Court of Justice seeking alternative classrooms for their children, outside the range of Qassams, until all the schools in the city are fully protected. The parents decided to turn to the court when the Israel Defense Forces Home Front Command announced that some of the classrooms at a Sderot highschool are not safe.
