New IDF recruits to sleep in tents at base hit by rockets last week

New recruits arrived Sunday at the Israel Defense Forces camp in Zikim, south of Ashkelon, where a Qassam rocket fired from Gaza hit a tent encampment last week. Some 70 soldiers were wounded in the attack.

Despite that incident, the new batch of recruits will sleep in tents during their six-week basic training course.

e IDF installed two cement shelters at the base the day after that rocket attack, but insisted the timing merely coincided with a prearranged schedule.

Army sources explained the new recruits will be staying in tents because alternative lodging was not available. They added, however, that the rocket hit prompted a decision to expedite substantially the installation of cement shelters throughout the base, as well as to place walls between tents to reduce casualties in case a rocket hits.

IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, who toured the perimeter fence along the Gaza Strip Sunday, accompanied by GOC Southern Command Yoav Galant, also paid a visit to the basic training camp at Zikim and was briefed at the scene on last week's incident.

One of the soldiers hurt in the attack, Private Avi Dorfman, remains in serious condition.
