WHO'S THAT GIRL?
By Anshel Pfeffer, Haaretz Jewish World Correspondent

"Rage on the streets of Mea Shearim," was until about ten years ago a pretty standard sentence in any report of real or perceived insults to Jewish ultra-Orthodox sensibilities.

It took the best efforts of a small group of dedicated journalists to change the accepted stereotype of the Haredi community as a homogeneous group, ready to take to the streets at the drop of a black hat. Most news editors and at least part of the paper-reading public now understand that there are different views within the ultra-Orthodox sector and that not all of them are Pavlovian demonstrators.

This paragraph in a Associated Press report over the Rosh Hashanah weekend proved that there at least some who still see Jewish orthodoxy in black and white: "Madonna Louise Ciccone Ritchie was raised a Roman Catholic, but she has become a follower of Jewish mysticism in recent years, raising the ire of many Orthodox Jews who see the adoption of Kabbalah by non-Jewish pop figures as an abomination."

Yes, well not quite.

Madonna's current visit to Israel as part of a group of Hollywood celebrities and hangers-on and their "Kabbalah conference" at the David Intercontinental Hotel in Tel Aviv was not high on the list of subjects for gossip among the faithful who thronged synagogues over Rosh Hashanah.

The hot topic was of course the mysterious raid on Syria, and anyone with the slightest security background and therefore "in the know" could be found at the center of eager little discussion groups in the synagogue yard.

Other favorite subjects were the same as every year, were the relative merits of the various hazanim and shofar-blowers and the interminable length of prayers, keeping everyone from lavish repasts waiting at home.

So where was the ire and anger over Madonna?

The great majority of religious Jews, whatever the level of their orthodoxy, have little interest in Kabbalah.

Of course there are many who revere sages and mystics reputed to be Kaballists and often seek blessings for them, sometimes paying top dollar for some mutterings and a bottle of holy water.

But an equal, if not even larger number of religious Jews regard Kabbalah as a discipline best left alone. Rabbi Ovadia Yosef for example has regularly ridiculed such mumbo-jumbo.

Even those who believe the Kabbalists have no time for Rabbi Philip Berg's Kabbalah Center, to which Madonna subscribes. In the past, Haredi rabbis were concerned enough to issues warnings against his teachings and there was at least one reported attempt by fanatics to set fire to one of his branches.

In recent years though, Rabbis have found that ignoring Berg and his growing flock is much more effective.

Madonna changing her name to Esther and Rebbetzin Berg?s attempts at straightening out Britney Spears might seem impressive, but they only make the Kabbalah Center seem more ridiculous and less of a spiritual threat in the Orthodox heartland.

The Israeli tabloids, understandably, are all agog with Madonna and Demi Moore's night out in Tel Aviv, it adds a bit of color to the Sunday papers that have only "foreign reports" on what really happened in Syria to use.

Over the Jewish New Year holiday, though, most Orthodox Jews were much more concerned with getting home before lunch was burnt on the hot-plate to work up any ire for Madonna.
