Palestinian militant leader says Hamas targeting his party

A senior leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) Saturday accused Hamas of systematically targeting his party in the Gaza Strip.

"PFLP leaders there came under ugly offensive and our radio station was stormed, equipment was confiscated and it is still closed down," Abdel Rahim Malouh, PFLP deputy secretary general, told reporters.

In recent weeks, several Hamas leaders have strongly slammed Gaza-based PFLP officials for criticizing Hamas' violent takeover of the Gaza Strip from forces loyal to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas in June.

Hamas then imposed control on Gaza while Abbas' Fatah movement increased crackdown on Hamas in the West Bank, widening political division between the two territories.

Malouh urged Hamas to "retreat back to the partnership with Fatah and President Abbas."

However, Malouh said he was sorry that current bids to restore dialogue "did not lead to any result since the two sides still lack the vision to handle the military takeover by Hamas in Gaza."

Meanwhile, Hamas said Saturday that its calls for dialogue with Fatah did not indicate supplications and weakness.

Palmedia, a Gaza-based pro-Hamas news website, quoted Ezzat al-Reshq, an exiled Hamas politburo member, as saying that he blamed Abbas for the political split between Gaza and the Fatah-dominated West Bank.

"Abbas is still refusing to accept the dialogue," said al-Reshq.

He justified the Gaza takeover by Hamas, which won elections in the Palestinian Authority in January 2006, by saying the move "was to protect Palestinian legitimacy and to maintain the Palestinian people's democratic choice."

"What happened was a natural result of security anarchy and attempts to stage a coup against the democratic choice," he said.
