Israeli neo-Nazis charged with racial assaults and incitement

State prosecutors on Tuesday indicted eight members of a suspected Israeli neo-Nazi cell for a number of racially-motivated aggravated assaults, conspiring to commit a crime and distributing materials to incite.

Charges against the suspects arrested in the central town of Petah Tikva Sunday include possession of racist materials and illegal weapons, as well as issuing threats. Alleged ring leader Arik (Eli) Bunyatov was also indicted for assault and battery.

According to the indictment, the eight defendants -mostly immigrants from the former Soviet Union- were led by Bunyatov and perpetrated hate crimes against Asians, religious Jews, drug addicts and homosexuals. Three of the suspects are minors.

The indictment also accuses Bunyatov of preaching neo-Nazi ideology to the other members, who are accused of recording their crimes on video and uploading them to the mainstream video-sharing Web site YouTube and to racist video-sharing sites.

Quotes from conversations Bunyatov allegedly had over the Internet with neo-Nazi activists abroad are included in the indictment. The prosecution says the material was recovered from Bunyatov's personal computer after his arrest. "Neo-Nazism isn't something you can walk away from once you get into it," the indictment quotes Bunyatov as saying in a correspondence with a fellow believer in the Aryan cause. "Problem is, we can't really fight for the cause in this country because it belong to the Jews," Bunyatov is quoted as saying.
