Thousands more survivors to receive stipend from Germany
By Anshel Pfeffer, Haaretz Correspondent

An additional 2000 to 3000 Israeli Holocaust survivors will begin receiving a NIS 600 monthly stipend from the German government in October following a broadening of the criteria for eligibility.

In 1992 a fund was formed with the purpose of securing restitution from Germany for survivors that had been overlooked. Until now, the Claims Conference granted stipends only to survivors with a monthly income of under NIS 6,500. However, following recent negotiations between committee representatives and the German treasury, it was decided to broaden the eligibility criteria.

Under the new criteria, survivors will still have to prove they make under NIS 6,500 a month, but government stipends and pensions will not be counted towards the monthly income figure.

According to the estimates of the Claims Conference, as a result of the revised criteria, Germany will pay an additional $250 million in restitution over the next ten years, and the number of survivors eligible for restitution will increase by 10 percent.
