Peres biography
Tags: Israel, Peres, blog

Shimon Peres is Israel's ninth president, and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate for his contribution to the peace process with the Palestinians.

As statesman, diplomat, and senior defense official, he has filled an unparalleled range of roles in Israeli public life, serving twice as prime minister, twice as defense minister, and three times as foreign minister.

Peres was elected to the Knesset in 1959, and would remain a member for 48 years - its longest-ever serving lawmaker - until his inauguration as president in 2007.

Born in Poland in 1923, he moved with his family to British Mandatory Palestine at age 11, later helping to found Kibbutz Alumot, where he worked as a farmer and a shepherd.

Beginning in the late 1940s, Peres became a close aide to Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. In 1953, Ben-Gurion appointed Peres, then 29, as director-general of the Defense Ministry.

During the 1950s and 60s, Peres would spearhead the building of the nuclear reactor project at Dimona
