Last update - 14:07 11/09/2007 Cheaper U.K.-Israel flights likely as bmi airline to open new route By Zohar Blumenkrantz, Haaretz Correspondent and The Associated Press Tags: Tel Aviv flights, London  The British airline bmi said Tuesday it plans to open a London-Tel Aviv flight route next year, a move likely to result in cheaper flights due to increased competition for passengers. The new service follows the signing of a bilateral agreement in Jerusalem Monday night between Israel and the United Kingdom. Advertisement "I congratulate both the U.K. and Israeli governments in recognizing the need to bring wider competition to air travel between the two countries," said Nigel Turner, the chief executive of bmi, the second largest airline operating at Heathrow airport in London. According to the accord, two airlines from each country will be able to fly from Israel to every city in the U.K. where there is an airport. Up to now, only airline from each country operated the routes - El Al and British Airways. "We are delighted that there has been a successful outcome to the inter-government negotiations allowing the designation of a second UK airline. We will be applying to be designated immediately," Turner said.
