Syrian analyst: We fought Israel before, we're ready for anything

Syrian commentator Az a-Din Darwish wrote in an article published in an official Syrian newspaper that Syria has fought against Israel before, and is prepared to face any possibility.

"Syria possesses the experience and ability that make it ready for any possibility, as long as it has to do with land, sovereignty and respect," Darwish wrote in the Syrian newspaper "Tishrin."

Syria on Thursday reported that its military had fired on Israel Air Force warplanes that had violated its airspace and "dropped munitions."

"Israel's entry into Syria's airspace was not a regular and insignificant event, and it won't be that, no matter how many senior Israeli officials try to mislead the public with their policy of misinformation, haziness and directed military censorship," Darwish wrote.

"The IAF operation is a provocation sowing evil" planned by "Israel's top echelons," Darwish continued. He repeated a statement previously made by Syrian Information Minister Mohsen Bilal and wrote "Syria retains the right to respond to aggression however and whenever it sees fit."

Darwish maintains in his article that Israel's government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, is looking for excuses to enter a confrontation with Syria, in order to "wash away the shame of Israel's defeat in Lebanon, and to convince the Israeli public it is still interested in deterrence." He adds that if Olmert's administration rejects Syria's peace overtures, it must necessarily be interested in war and in combustion of the entire region. "Syria knows this," he writes "and has placed this issue at the top of its priority list."
