Tennis star Shahar Peer reaches quarterfinals at U.S. Open
By Rami Hipsch, Haaretz Correspondent

Shahar Peer became the first Israeli woman to reach the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open by defeating Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-4, 6-1 in the round of 16 Monday night.

Peer, No. 19 in the WTA singles rankings and seeded 18th at Flushing Meadows, will face either Anna Chakvetadze (6) of Russia or Austria's Tamira Paszek, who was not seeded.

Radwanska (30), who upset Maria Sharapova (2) in the third round, took a quick 2-0 lead after breaking Peer's serve in the second game of the first set.

Peer did not waste any time getting back into the match, breaking Radwanska's serve in the third game. The highest-ranked Israeli woman evened the set at 2-2 with a love-game, capping it with her first ace.

After Peer took a 40-15 lead in the fifth game, she converted the first of her two break opportunities to take a 3-2 lead in the set. Peer and Radwanska continued to hold their serves for the remainder of the match, and with Peer holding a 5-4 lead and serving for the match, the crowd gave her their full support. She took a 40-15 lead and then closed out the set on her first serve.

After Radwanska forced Peer to run from one side of court to the other, taking a 1-0 lead with a big winner, Peer evened the second set at 1-1 by holding her serve.

Peer then won five straight games to clinch her spot in the quarterfinals. She went ahead 2-1 with her best game of the match, as Peer found answers for all of Radwanska's moves.

The Israeli continued to control the pace and did not allow Radwanska to get back into the match. Peer took a 3-1 lead and then broke Radwanska in the fifth game.

As Peer went ahead 40-15 in the sixth game with her best serve of the match, her defense left Radwanska helpless.

Down 5-1 and facing elimination, Radwanska put up a fight and they contested the closest game of the match. The lead went back and forth as Radwanska tried to fight for her dignity. Peer finally converted on her third match point, breaking Radwanska for the third time in the set.
