Israel defeats Macedonia, advances to European basketball championship

Israel's national basketball team advanced to the Eurobasket 2007 european championships on Friday, after defeating Macedonia 92-87 in Menorca, Spain.

Israel will begin competition in its eighth straight European championship tournament Monday with a game against reigning champion Greece. Along with the reigning champs, Israel's group also includes Russia and Serbia.

Israel was unable to automatically qualify for the championship tournament in the group round, and instead had to fight its way in through the additional qualifying round.

Israel led Macedonia for the vast majority of Friday's game, although Macedonia was able to come back twice - once during the second quarter, and once late in the game, threatening to snatch a victory at the last minute.

Israel was led by its guard Yotam Halperin, who scored 26 points, including 15 in the first quarter alone. Guard Meir Tapiro added 13 points in the third quarter without missing a single shot, including a three-pointer in the waning seconds of the quarter to give Israel a 14-point lead.
