No slave to trends

Yardena Ziv, who has been designing for the Honigman clothing chain for 20 years, does not chase after trends and yet manages - every season - to produce a contemporary collection with a youthful spirit.

Honigman appears, with Castro, at the top of the list of Israeli retail chains that effectively translate trends into accessible fashion. Ziv's winter collection draws inspiration from the classic, European look, with an emphasis on fine details in the garments' interiors as well as their exteriors. Audrey Hepburn and Twiggy (respectively, the classic good-but-sophisticated little girl and the wild child of the '60s) are two sources of inspiration for Ziv's winter season. Continuing the look of her summer collection, the 1970s are expressed in printed knits and dresses, while the 1980s are reflected in metallic hues. The 1940s are expressed in smoky colors and long silhouettes.

Ziv is no slave to trends but she does pay attention to contemporary fashion to create collections that suit a variety of women. Ziv says Israeli women cannot be characterized by a uniform sense of style.

"It depends on age and regions of the country," she says. "Most women do not take age into account. They want to look like their daughters or look sexy. But there has been a positive change in the style of dress, in recent years, and more women understand that you can look sexy in clothes that are less clingy but flatter the body in a more sophisticated shape."

From season to season, she adds, she "lifts the clientele a little higher," without creating a revolution. This season, in addition to dresses and tunics, the collection includes many long and short nubby knits, in line with trends, and more delicate knits, in vest, wrap-around, or cardigan cuts, with long or three-quarter length sleeves, or sleeves with long cuffs and large buttons. Some of the latter are covered in wool. All these garments are multi-functional: They may be worn over striped blouses with balloon sleeves, men's wear look white shirts, short-sleeved dresses, basic turtlenecks and more.

Grays, plums, smoky greens, wine, brown, and black contribute to a handsome, of-the-moment palette that provides the option of many stylish combinations. Reasonably priced trench coats with striped and quilted linings and a chic, short jacket upgrade the look.

A nod to the 1960s appears in straight-legged pants, bell-sleeved blouses, pleated at elbow or shoulder, and printed skirts and tunics. Lovely, glossy vinyl trench coats, in a variety of lengths, provide an urban, contemporary look. In contrast, tailored suits offer solutions to women in professions that require an official and dignified appearance. Basic gold Lurex tank tops make for appropriate evening wear, as do little black dresses in flattering cuts. The collection of complementary accessories includes glossy bags, belts, and pretty scarves in shades of gold, bronze, black, and white.
