Two toddlers killed in fire in Druze village in Golan Heights
By Eli Ashkenazi, Haaretz Correspondent

A two-year-old boy and his four-year-old sister died of smoke inhalation in a fire which broke out early Tuesday in their home in the Druze Golan village of Majdal Shams.

Family members took the stricken children to the Magen David Adom emergency medicine clinic in the village, where efforts were made to resuscitate them, but to no avail. The two children were pronounced dead.

The fire erupted while the two children were alone in the house, situated in the Hahar neighborhood, which is relatively far from the center of town. The children's father works in construction in Tel Aviv and their mother had gone to a medical clinic in town for tests.

A neighbor said that he had driven the mother back from the clinic, and heard her scream shortly after dropping her off. He said that he then ran toward the house only to find that it was ablaze, and watch neighbors remove the children's bodies from the burning building.

According to area residents, an hour elapsed from the moment the fire department was summoned and until the fire fighters arrived. They added that since the fire station that served the Druze villages in the area had closed down, fire fighters have to make their way from Kiryat Shmona and Katzrin, which are relatively far.

The head of the fire department in the eastern Galilee and the Golan Heights said that though the area fire station is closed most of the time due to budget cuts, it was in fact open on Tuesday, and three experienced firefighters had arrived at the scene from that station 27 minutes after receiving the call.

The fire fighters maintained that they had been summoned after the children had already died.

A preliminary investigation into the incident revealed that the children had been left alone in the house behind locked doors.
