Hanan Melcer sworn in as Supreme Court Justice
By Nurit Roth, Haaretz Correspondents

Hanan Melcer was sworn in as a Supreme Court justice Monday, making him the first in many years to come from the private sector.

Melcer was unanimously chosen by the judicial selection committee some two months ago, and is expected to be joined shortly by another lawyer, Dr. Yoram Danziger, who was one vote short of a Supreme Court appointment when Melcer was selected.

"My selection to the Supreme Court is both the fulfillment of all my professional desires and a mission imposed upon me," Melcer said once the appointment was announced. "If I did not see judging as a mission, I would not be leaving a flourishing firm."

Melcer, 56, founded Melcer & Co. Law Offices in Tel Aviv in 1978 and is a married father of four. His firm handles fields including commercial and corporate law, banking law, building and planning law and High Court of Justice litigation.

Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch said Melcer's familiarity with the High Court from a lawyer's perspective was an advantage in his move behind the bench.

"Hanan is no stranger to the chamber of law," Beinisch said at the swearing-in ceremony Monday at the President's Residence. "He knows it well from standing before the judges when he comes to make his argument from the attorneys' bench. The ability to pay attention to the advocate before the court and to understand him is one of the advantages he is bringing with him to judging."
