Baby 'weights' for baby weight
By Danit Nitzan

Even women who worked out on a regular basis before giving birth will discover their bodies are not quite the same after the big event. Most women stop exercising altogether, whereas others take a break and then dabble in new fitness regimens. Still others start exercising for the first time after giving birth - to tone and strengthen their new postpartum bodies.

While these women do not attend fitness classes at local gyms, the results are noticeable. They primarily take to the streets to train in the fresh air, pushing their babies in strollers or carrying them in slings. In the early morning hours - in Modi'in, Jerusalem, Ra'anana, Tel Aviv and other cities - flocks of new mothers can be seen power-walking with their loaded strollers, lifting babies into the air to strengthen their arm muscles and stretching while joyfully singing songs to their offspring.

Baby Shape, Stroller Jogging and similar "classes" combine aerobic activity and strength training. Infants are either passive participants or "weights," and give often lonely, new mothers an opportunity to meet one another. They quickly discover that their mood vastly improves after an hour of physical activity. Moreover, these sessions typically provide an additional hour of social interaction with women of similar age and in similar circumstances.

Dikla Bienstein, a 28-year-old social worker from Jerusalem, is also a fitness trainer. Before she gave birth to her now-eight-month-old daughter Shir, she led fitness sessions for pregnant women and others; she continued to train women during her own pregnancy. "I signed Shir and myself up for Baby Shape sessions four weeks after giving birth and now I lead the classes myself."

Despite the prenatal fitness and training regimen she followed before giving birth, Dikla says the postpartum sessions are not easy for her. "Lessons include walking while pushing a stroller, to a point of jogging, running and even dancing around the stroller while singing the baby a song. In addition, we do strength exercises using a resistance band and equipment in the park, like benches and street lights. The babies are also kinds of weights that we lift and lower. All of that makes the lessons challenging."

In addition to be physically challenging, the session also acted as a stress reliever for Bienstein. "As a new mother on maternity leave, alone most of the time, it's a big relief to meet other women in a similar situation. To talk, ask questions and spend time with other adults. I learned a lot and also made friends." Bienstein believes every new mother should find an activity which puts her in regular contact with other young mothers, even if that activity does not necessarily make her slender and svelte. "It's important for our mental well-being to get some space and feel good, no matter what the desired results."

Is this exercise effective?

Bienstein: "The singing and dancing are distracting and that may create the impression that we are not really exercising. But it's only a distraction and, in fact, we really work out without paying attention. I look for slopes to push the stroller uphill. You walk at a brisk pace, and also carry the baby in a sling or push a stroller, and talk to the mother beside you. By the end of the lesson, you are really short of breath."

Jerusalem nurse Dorit Zeil-Lotan is enrolled at a gym and attends Bienstein's Baby Shape sessions. "I have been working out and exercising all of my life. I continued to train during both previous pregnancies and the current, third pregnancy, before giving birth to Noya, now eight months old. But in my previous pregnancies, there was no training of this type - only slow, toning classes for women who had given birth that didn't really challenge me. I'd take my baby to the gym in an infant carrier, climb onto the treadmill and hope that he wouldn't wake up. Training outside is so pleasant that I only skip it if it's very cold. I thought I would only join for three months until I got back into shape, but I have attended the class for seven months."

Lotan finds that the influence of this training on the infants is an added bonus. "The fresh air tires out the babies and many of them simply fall asleep. While they are sleeping, we, the mothers, reinforce the bond between us."
