Comptroller: State must do more to protect communities against Qassams

State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss on Wednesday slammed the government's steps to protect western Negev structures against Qassam rockets, during a tour of a school in the Eshkol Regional Council adjacent to the Gaza border.

While at the school, the comptroller said that "the government needs to do much more, to save the lives of people who could - god forbid - be harmed," he said.

"We are leaving here troubled," Lindenstrauss said at the end of the tour.

The school, which is seven kilometers from the border with Gaza, received approval last week to set up transportable shelters next to the classrooms.

Despite the fact that the shelters will only be ready by the end of October, council head Or Naamati said that "as of now the school year will open as planned, as instructed to us by the Israel Defense Forces' Home Front Command."

Eshkol Regional Council officials did say that if the situation worsens, the school would have to be evacuated in coordination with the IDF.
