Prime minister's motorcade hits, wounds Jerusalem girl

A vehicle in Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's motorcade on Thursday evening hit a 10-year-old girl near the entrance to Jerusalem.

The girl was lightly wounded and taken for medical treatment at Hadassah University Hospital, in Ein Karem, Jerusalem.

The accident reportedly occurred while the girl was crossing the road while oncoming traffic had a green light.

The prime minister was reportedly traveling in the motorcade at the time, but was not riding in the car involved in the accident, according to the prime minister's spokesman.

Initial investigations revealed that the prime minister's motorcade arrived at the junction near the entrance to the city around 9 P.M. According to Shin Bet regulations, the motorcade is not allowed to stop at red lights while transporting the prime minister, in order to avert potential assassination attempts.

The cars in the motorcade were driving with their sirens and lights on when they arrived at the junction. The girl reportedly tried to cross the street and the same time and was hit and lightly injured by one of the cars in the motorcade.

Police sources said that the motorcade drove through a red light while the girl was crossing on green.

A paramedic who was traveling in the motorcade rushed to the girl and administered first aid.

Police reports state that the vehicle involved in the accident remained at the scene while the rest of the motorcade left the scene. The report also stated that Magen David Adom ambulances arrived at the scene shortly thereafter to treat the child.

The prime minister's bureau stated that Olmert was only notified of the incident after he arrived at his office in Jerusalem.

Olmert reportedly called the hospital to check on the girl's condition.
