IDF troops kill Palestinian, detain 2 near Gaza Strip border fence
By Amos Harel and Yoav Stern, Haaretz Correspondents, Reuters and Haaretz Service

Israel Defense Forces troops on Saturday shot dead a Palestinian in the Gaza Strip and detained two others for questioning after they approached the border security fence, an IDF spokesman said.

IDF sources said the army was checking the possibility that the men were attempting to lay an explosive device near the fence.

Close to 6 P.M., soldiers from the Golani infantry brigade noticed three Palestinians approaching the security fence south of the Karni border crossing. The soldiers subsequently opened fire and killed one of the men, Mahmoud Abid, 17, a resident of the Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip.

The troops detained the other two Palestinians for questioning.

No Palestinian militant groups claimed Abid as one of their operatives and hospital staff in Gaza said he was dressed in civilian clothes.

The army has not ruled out the possibility that the men were attempting to cross the border to find work in Israel. The IDF Southern Command said troops have great difficulty in discerning whether Palestinians approaching the fence do so in order to carry out terror attacks, or for other reasons entirely.

The IDF soldiers did not find weapons either on Abid's body, or in the possession of the two Palestinians detained.

Earlier in the day, IDF soldiers detained five Palestinian men who had infiltrated across the heavily fortified border fence from Gaza who were looking for work in Israel, the army said.

Also Saturday, a Palestinian woman was wounded on Saturday during clashes between IDF troops and Palestinian militants in a refugee camp in the West Bank city of Nablus, according to Palestinian reports.

The woman was in her home when she was hit by IDF fire in her shoulder, the report said. She was treated at a hospital for her wounds.

Also Friday, IDF troops arrested two Palestinian youths at the Hawara checkpoint near Nablus. The youths were caught holding three explosive devices, which IDF sappers subsequently destroyed.

IDF sources said they shot a Palestinian during the operation in Nablus, after militants threw explosives at them. No soldiers were wounded in the operation.

A soldier was lightly wounded on Friday in the same area, when Palestinian militants threw an explosive device at his unit during a patrol in Balata refugee camp near Nablus.

On the same day, IDF troops killed two Palestinians and wounded six others during a raid near the West Bank city of Jenin on Friday.

Palestinian security officials said that a gun battle broke out between troops and local gunmen in the village of Kafr Dan. One gunman and a 16-year-old boy were killed.

An IDF spokesman said that "several gunmen were identified during an activity against terror infrastructure. The troops fired at them and identified hitting them."

The Abu Amar Brigades, an armed group linked to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas's secular Fatah faction, said that the gunman killed was on of its leaders.

Also on Friday, three Qassam rockets fired from Gaza struck the western Negev, including one that hit south of the port city of Ashkelon.

There were no reports of injuries in any of the attacks.

Earlier on Friday, the Israel Defense Forces blew up a tunnel in the northern Gaza Strip, which was dug to facilitate a terror attack on Israel, and arrested six wanted militants in the West Bank.

The IDF used explosives to destroy the Gaza tunnel, whose opening was uncovered Tuesday 700 meters from the Gaza-Israel border, on the outskirts of the northern Gaza Strip village Beit Lahia.

The Golani infantry brigade, following information provided by military intelligence sources and assisted by combat engineering and armored forces, discovered the tunnel while operating in the northern Gaza Strip.

Intelligence sources believe the tunnel was intended for infiltration into Israeli territory with the intention of carrying out a large-scale terror attack.

Intelligence sources reported that they had information indicating that the attack was meant to be carried out in an Israeli town just north of Gaza.

The tunnel was dug under greenhouses used to cultivate tomatoes. The IDF also found a generator in the area, which supplied the electricity for the digging tools. A gag order was lifted on its discovery Wednesday.

Tunnels are increasingly employed as a means to infiltrate Israel in order to execute terrorist attacks against civilians, and for the purpose of smuggling weapons and illegal contraband.
