Tiberias mother arrested on suspicion of imprisoning, beating toddlers
By Eli Ashkenazi

A 30-year-old woman from Tiberias was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of seriously beating and imprisoning her two sons, aged two and three, on Monday night. Police found the older child smeared in excrement in the bathroom and the younger one in a locked room.

Signs of abuse, apparently caused by belt lashes, were found on the bodies of both boys.

The children - accompanied by their grandmother, who arrived after the authorities came - were taken to Poriya Hospital in Tiberias for treatment.

They were set to be transferred to the custody of welfare officials after their release.

The mother, whose remand was extended by six days Tuesday, denied abusing her children. She said she was punishing the children in an effort to stop them from soiling their underwear and because they were keeping her from resting.

The woman, who is divorced from the children's father, attempted to jump out the window of the fourth-floor apartment when police came to arrest her and is due to be sent for psychiatric treatment. She is suspected of abuse, neglect and false imprisonment.

Police were called to the apartment by neighbors who heard the children crying for an extended period.
