In an unusual turn of events, Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik came under fire Monday for her alleged foot-dragging in calling a special session during the Knesset's summer recess on a stipend for Holocaust survivors.

MKs accused Itzik of harming the status of the Knesset by trying to protect the government from criticism. Ilan Ostfeld, communications adviser for Itzik, said that the speaker had announced last week that "the Knesset will meet in the coming days for a discussion on aid to Holocaust survivors."

According to Knesset regulations, the signatures of 25 MKs are required in order to hold an off-season session. As of two weeks ago, Itzik had already acquired 50 signatures.
