7-year-old Petah Tikva boy critically injured in hit-and-run
By Roni Singer-Heruti

A 7-year-old Petah Tikva boy was critically injured Thursday night in a hit-and-run accident near the city's Sirkin intersection.

Two boys were crossing Route 40 shortly after 6 P.M., at a point 200 meters from Sirkin junction headed from the eastern side toward Sha'ariya neighborhood, when a white or silver-colored Hyundai Getz driving north hit one of the boys with great force, hurling him 20 meters.

The second boy provided police with an eyewitness account.

The driver reportedly slowed down immediately afterward, but seconds later stepped on the gas and fled northward.

Police have a partial make on the car and the license plate, and believe they will manage to locate the driver. However, the public is requested to report any light-colored Hyundai Getz cars with damaged fronts.

Traffic investigators at the scene were astounded to find that the road has no crosswalk for the many pedestrians who cross there. That section of the road is flanked by a large residential neighborhood and a large playground.

"It is simply scandalous that there is no crosswalk there," said Sharon region traffic chief Superintendent Sigal Bar-Zvi. He added that no crosswalk left the boy no option but to cross the road where he did.
