(AP) Last update - 18:18 09/08/2007 Hamas arrests doctor who said Gaza hospital short on supplies By The Associated Press Tags: doctor, Hamas, Fatah, Gaza Hamas security forces on Thursday arrested a Fatah-affiliated doctor who had tried to organize a strike at the Gaza hospital from which he had been dismissed. Dr. Jomma Saka, who is loyal to the Fatah movement of Palestinian Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, held a news conference last week where he claimed that the medical equipment at Shifa Hospital was in short supply as a result of border closures following Hamas' takeover of Gaza in mid-June. The Health Ministry, controlled by Hamas, accused Saka of lying, and then fired him on grounds of corruption, accusing him among other things of stealing furniture from the hospital. Advertisement Saka denied Hamas' allegations, and had been organizing a strike at Shifa Hospital, meant to pressure Hamas into reinstating him as head of the hospital's public relations department. The doctors and nurses at Shifa stopped working for two hours Wednesday afternoon as part of the efforts to reinstate Saka. Militiamen took Saka and his 18-year-old son into custody at around 2 a.m. Thursday and transferred them to an unknown destination, his wife, Hanan, said. Hamas denied that Saka's arrest was politically motivated. "The decision to send Dr. Saka for investigations stemmed from many reasons, including giving false information that has intimidated the public", Dr. Bassem Naim, the health minister in the Hamas government in Gaza, said in a statement.
