Sudanese man found dead in Sinai, was apparently fleeing to Israel

The body of a Sudanese man, bound hand and foot and bloodied from a beating, was found outside a village center in northern Sinai on Wednesday.

Police said he had probably argued with smugglers who take illegal migrants to the border between Egypt and Israel. An official said it is not uncommon for human traffickers to kill illegal migrants who refuse to pay fees due.

ndreds of Sudanese, many of them from the troubled western region of Darfur, have fled to Israel seeking asylum and work.

However, many have been caught and deported, and some have been shot. Last week, three Sudanese refugees were shot and beaten to death with stones by Egyptian troops as they tried to reach the Israeli border.

Security sources named the latest victim as Ibrahim Abdallah Bakhit Mohamed, aged 30, who was dumped overnight in the village of el-Tuwaiyil, about three kilometers (two miles) south of the town of al-Arish.

The village is on one of the back roads which smugglers use to reach the Israeli border without passing through Egyptian police checkpoints, the sources said.

Israel estimates that 2,800 people have entered the country illegally through its Sinai Peninsula border in recent years, nearly all from Africa.

The number shot up in the past two months, apparently as word spread of job opportunities in Israel. As many as 50 people arrived each day in June, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Israel has requested Egypt increase efforts to prevent infiltration of its borders.
