More than 1,000 march to mark two years since Shfaram attack
By Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent

More than a thousand people took part on Saturday in a march in the northern city of Shfaram in order to mark two years since a Jewish terrorist killed four Arab residents of the city.

The march was attended by Knesset members, council heads and representatives from political movements in the Arab sector. The march began at city hall, set out toward the site of the attack in a Druze neighborhood and concluded at a monument erected to honor the dead.

Two youths, ages 16 and 18, were arrested during the course of the march on suspicion of burning Israeli flags.

On the eve of Israel's disengagement from the Gaza Strip and northern West Bank, Eden Natan-Zada opened fire inside a bus in Shfaram. After he was subdued and subsequently handcuffed by police, an angry mob stormed the bus and beat him to death.

The chairman of the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee in Israel, Shuweiki Hatib, said in his speech that the suspects in Natan-Zada's killings should not stand trial. He said the committee would appeal to the appropriate parties so that the suspects would receive "a complete acquittal."

Hatib also called on Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and President Shimon Peres to "turn code words into action," saying, "The incitement needs to stop and so do attempts to legislate faulty laws."

Police ban Shfaram protest over failure to try Natan-Zada's killers
Police rejected Friday a request by far-right activists to hold a protest this weekend in the Shfaram against the state's failure thus far to indict those responsible for killing Natan-Zada.

The far-right activists objected to the decision, saying their request is legally legitimate. Police will conduct situation periodic situation assessments in the coming days to determine whether to allow the protest to go ahead and under what conditions.

Police sources said that in any event the protest will not be allowed to take place in Shfaram due to fears of disturbances, but that they are considering the option of permitting it outside the town.

The Justice Ministry said Thursday that the future of the legal proceedings against those involved in killing Natan-Zada was awaiting a decision by Attorney General Menachem Mazuz.

Seven Shfaram residents were arrested in connection with the killing. Their remand was repeatedly extended before they were eventually released with restrictions.

Roughly one month ago, the Acre Magistrate's Court removed most of the restrictions, expressing doubt whether the seven would be indicted at all.
