Qassam hits Sderot; man suffers shock

A man from Sderot was treated for shock Friday morning when Palestinians fired a Qassam rocket that landed near the western Negev town, Israel Radio reported. Palestinians also fired mortar shells from the Strip, causing no injuries. Later Friday, another Qassam hit the western Negev, causing no damage or injuries. On Thursday, two Qassam rockets landed in Sderot, damaging several structures. Seven people suffered shock and five were taken to the hospital. (Mijal Grinberg)

Rivlin acts to ease Ethiopian marriage

MK Reuven Rivlin (Likud) said he would be initiating a discussion in the Knesset Immigration and Absorption Committee on delegating the authority of rabbis of the Ethiopian community, following a report in Thursday's Haaretz on the problems of Ethiopian couples seeking to marry. The couples said only Rabbi Yosef Hadana is authorized by the Chief Rabbinate to wed the Judaism of Ethiopian Israelis, which means long delays in setting their wedding date. Rivlin invited Ethiopian spiritual leaders, Sephardic Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar and Ethiopian community rabbis to the meeting. (Ayanwo Farada Sanbetu)

IMA won't oppose new med school

The Israel Medical Association (IMA) has withdrawn its opposition to the opening of a fifth medical school in Israel, approved by the Council for Higher Education and to be located in the Galilee. There is no choice but to allow the opening of the school, IMA Chairman Professor Yoram Balashar said yesterday, which will produce 150 graduates a year to ease the expected shortage of doctors by 2015. However, Balashar said there was an urgent need to expand the existing medical schools and called for government funds. (Yuval Azoulay)

Tamra resident dies in tractor accident

A resident of the Galilee town of Tamra was killed yesterday morning when his tractor overturned in his field. Police said the victim, Iyad Hijazi, 31, was driving to the field with three family members when he lost control of the vehicle. The three relatives managed to jump from the tractor, but Hijazi was crushed beneath it and critically injured. He was taken to a medical clinic by family members, where he died. Family members said Hijazi worked as a teacher in the south during the week and returned home on weekends to help on the family farm. (Jack Khoury)

Missing Israeli found in India after 48 hours

Israeli backpacker Sa'ar Revivo was found on Friday in good condition in northern India after he had been missing for 48 hours. Revivo had left his friends and taken off by motorbike. A few hours later the bike and his belongings were found nearby. On Friday, a team sent out by Revivo's insurance company found him. He was dehydrated and received medical treatment. A staffer a the Israeli Embassy, who was in the area to assist the four Israelis being questioned about the murder of Dror Shek last week, also dealt with the Revivo case. (Barak Ravid)
