New simple-Hebrew paper to hit stands
By Yael Walzer

Newspaper stands across the country may soon offer two new publications, both bearing the name Yisrael Hayom (Israel Today). The first belongs to Jewish-American billionaire Sheldon Adelson, whose free daily will have a mass circulation of 300,000 copies. The second, whose launch was announced yesterday, is a weekly targeting new immigrants and elementary school students.

The new simple-Hebrew weekly belongs to Gov-Kartin Business Communications, owned by financial reporters and editors, Avi Kartin and Daniel Gov. The two plan to charge NIS 2 per copy, which they intend to sell in kiosks and groceries.

Gov and Kartin say elementary schools, ulpans and schools in Arab towns are their target readership. They also said Israel's large immigrant communities held financial potential.

Gov and Kartin's Yisrael Hayom will be printed in the thousands. They said they were currently conducting negotiations with a potential investor to foot the initial cost of publishing, - estimated at several hundreds of thousand of shekels.

The new weekly is, in fact, not that new. Gov and Kartin already published an earlier simple-Hebrew weekly bearing the same name in 1993; it lasted a year before being shut. "The new weekly will be written in simple Hebrew, and some of the words will be punctuated to indicate pronunciation. It will deal with the same subjects as the older version of Yisrael Hayom. It will deal with a variety of issues such as politics, diplomatic developments, economics, consumer pages, sports and world news," Kartin told TheMarker.

"In its earlier edition in the nineties, Yisrael Hayom served as an important tool for new immigrants in their efforts to learn Hebrew. After two years, we had to close it down due to financial difficulties. We knew that there would come time when we would want to pick up where we left off. That moment has now come."

According to Gov and Kartin, their decision to launch the new weekly at this point in time did have something to do with Adelson's daily. "I admit, it served as a catalyst. I'm not sure Adelson knew of our weekly, but his new daily irked us, it was as though someone had snatched something that belonged to us. We did not register the name as a trademark, and we didn't examine the legal aspects, but we were there first," Kartin added.
