Last update - 17:13 15/07/2007 Policeman jailed for 16 years for raping Holocaust survivor By Fadi Eyadat, Haaretz Correspondent The Haifa District Court on Sunday sentenced Ahmed Hindawi, a border policeman, to 16 and a half years in prison for raping a 70-year-old Holocaust survivor. Hindawi, 23, was convicted of rape, sodomy, extortion, disruption of proceedings and shooting in a residential area. He was also given a suspended sentence of three years in addition to the jail sentence. The indictment shows that one year ago, as the defendant was driving along a highway north of Haifa, he noticed the victim walking along the side of the road. He stopped the car and demanded she enter the vehicle. The victim refused and crossed over to the other side of the road. Hindawi then exited his car and grabbed her, throwing her over the railing on the side of the road. The woman tried to push Hindawi off, but he struck her on the head until she released her grip on the railing. He then pulled her into a thorny bush and raped her. Advertisement According to the indictment, Hindawi then urinated on her in order to humiliate her, and left her there with injuries all over her body. Hindawi confessed to the deeds shortly after police began questioning him on the incident. The judges ruled that Hindawi's actions "can be classified under the most severe type of sexual crime. The defendant hunted a weak victim who was innocently walking by the road. A Holocaust survivor who, despite the atrocities she had experience, has managed to survive, rehabilitate her life and start a family, until all at once her world was destroyed, for the second time, while the defendant did unbearable things to her. Today the complainant is injured physically and mentally." Hindawi was also convicted of perpetrating a hit-and-run with his vehicle. On the same morning of the rape, Hindawi's car rammed into another vehicle and then fled the scene. The driver of the second car chased after Hindawi and asked him to pull over. Hindawi refused to give them his name or insurance information, identifying himself as a police officer, and demanded they return to their car while threatening them with his weapon, an M-16 assault rifle. As the passengers returned frightened to their vehicle, Hindawi fired several shots into the air, even though he was within the limits of a residential area.
