Channel 2 news anchorman Gadi Sukenik resigns after 12 years
By Asaf Carmel, Haaretz Correspondent

Gadi Sukenik announced his resignation from the Channel Two news company, where he has been an presenter on the central news edition daily since 2001.

Sukenik came to the decision on his own to leave the job, and told company executives a week ago. However, the announcement was not released until Thursday.

A replacement has yet to be found for the 54-year-old journalist, so he will continue broadcasting the 8 P.M news with Yonit Levy for at least another month.

Channel Two released a statement after Haaretz published news of the resignation, reading, "After 12 years in the news company and more than six years anchoring the central news edition, Gadi Sukenik has decided to resign and start in the business sector." According to the statement, Sukenik is due to quit by the end of 2007.

Sukenik said, "I thank all of my colleagues at the news company and to all the coworkers at Channel Two for the challenging and wonderful years together. In my opinion, the time has come for a break and a change. Also today, as always, I am proud to be a part of the most important and leading news body in Israel."

Avi Weiss, the acting CEO of Channel Two news, said, "On behalf of myself and the entire news company, I want to thank Gadi for the devotion, the professionalism, and the successful cooperation in the years he worked in the company."

Sukenik started his career in 1978 as the financial correspondent for Israel Radio. In 1990, he moved to Channel One as the crime correspondent, and later was promoted to political correspondent of the channel. In 1995, Sukenik transferred to Channel Two as a senior political correspondent and presented Friday's main news edition along with Emmannuel Rosen. In 1998 he stopped working as a correspondent and presented his own news show, "Five with Gadi Sukenik." In 2001, he was asked to present the central news edition instead of Yaakov Eilon.

Six months ago, Sukenik was a victim of a widely publicized verbal attack after former President Katsav refused to answer his questions regarding sex crime allegations in a press conference.
