Poll: Israelis prefer transportation on Sabbath to open malls

Half the Jewish population would forego shopping in exchange for public transportation and leisure activities on Saturday, according to a survey to be presented at the Caesarea Conference on Tuesday.

The conference session will deal with the economic and social implications of a short workweek and a day of rest in addition to Saturday.

e survey, conducted by the Israel Democracy Institute, found that only 27 percent of the Jewish community define themselves as Sabbath observers, while 36 percent did shopping during the past month, according to the poll
