UN Security Council condemns bombing that killed six UNIFIL soldiers
By Reuters

The United Nations Security Council on Monday condemned a bombing that killed six UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon and affirmed its backing for the Lebanese government.

The car bomb hit a Spanish patrol on Sunday in the first deadly attack on the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) since the Second Lebanon War between Israel and Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah guerrillas backed by Iran and Syria.

The bombing presents a challenge to the Western-backed Beirut government, locked in a paralysing political conflict with the Hezbollah-led opposition.

Hezbollah condemned the bombing. No group has claimed responsibility, but the Fatah al-Islam group battling the army in the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared had previously accused UNIFIL of bombarding the camp.

A statement by the 15-nation Security Council condemned "in the strongest terms the terrorist attack" and commended the government for its commitment to find those responsible.

"The Security Council reaffirms its full support to the Lebanese government and army in their efforts to ensure security and stability throughout Lebanon," it said
